Thompson’s
Roofing is dedicated to the protection of its
employee/contractor from on-the-job injuries. All
employee/contractor of Thompson’s Roofing have the
responsibility to work safely on the job. The purpose of the
plan is to supplement our existing safety and health program and
to ensure that every employee/contractor who works for
Thompson’s Roofing recognizes workplace fall hazards and takes
the appropriate measures to address those hazards.
Each
employee/contractor will be trained in these procedures and will
strictly adhere to them except when doing so would expose the
employee/contractor to a greater hazard. If, in the
employee/contractor/contractor's opinion, this is the case, the
employee/contractor is to notify the competent person of their
concern and have the concern addressed before proceeding.
It is the
responsibility of every employee/contractor and supervisor to
implement this Fall Protection Plan. Continual observational
safety checks of work operations and the enforcement of the
safety policy and procedures shall be regularly enforced. The
crew supervisor, foreman or designated safety inspector is
responsible for correcting any unsafe practices or conditions
immediately.
It is the
responsibility of the employer to ensure that all
employee/contractor understand and adhere to the procedures of
this plan and to follow the instructions of the crew supervisor,
foreman or designated safety inspector. It is also the
responsibility of the employee/contractor to bring to
management's attention any unsafe or hazardous conditions or
practices that may cause injury to either themselves or any
other employee/contractor/contractors. Any changes to the Fall
Protection Plan must be approved by the crew supervisor foreman,
designated safety inspector and owner.
When using the
Plan to implement the fall protection options available, workers
must be protected through limited access to high hazard
locations. Before any non-conventional fall protection systems
are used as part of the work plan, a controlled access zone
(CAZ) shall be clearly defined by the competent person as an
area where a recognized hazard exists. The demarcation of the
CAZ shall be communicated by the competent person in a
recognized manner, either through signs, wires, tapes, ropes or
chains. We also make sure that all safety signs are placed
around potential hazard areas for employee/contractor as well as
specific signs for residents.
Job Site
All inspectors
will wear proper clothing. Hard hats will be worn at the site
for all roofing construction projects and OSHA roof construction
safety requirements will be followed.
Check ladders
before using to insure they are safe, in good working order,
extend 3 rungs above the roof edge, are properly secured, and
are installed at proper slope.
c. Drinking
alcoholic beverages on the job, reporting to work intoxicated or
being under the influence of drugs is strictly forbidden and not
allowed on any construction site.
During hot
weather, be particularly aware of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke symptoms. Employee/contractor/contractors should drink
water frequently and get out of the sun if they become dizzy.
During cold weather, be aware of hypothermia and frostbite
symptoms. Employee/contractor/contractors should dress warmly
(in layers), warm up frequently, and stay dry.
Thompson’s
Roofing shall take the following steps to ensure that the CAZ is
clearly marked or controlled by the competent person:
All access to
the CAZ must be restricted to authorized entrants;
All workers
who are permitted in the CAZ shall be listed in the appropriate
sections of the Plan (or be visibly identifiable by the
competent person) prior to implementation;
The competent
person shall ensure that all protective elements of the CAZ be
implemented prior to the beginning of work.
Safety
Monitoring System
A safety
monitoring system means a fall protection system in which a
competent person is responsible for recognizing and warning
employee/contractor/contractors of fall hazards. The duties of
the safety monitor are to:
1. Warn by
voice when approaching the open edge in an unsafe Manner. 2.
Warn by voice if there is a dangerous situation developing which
Cannot be seen by another person involved with product
placement, Such as a member getting out of control. 3. Make the
roofers aware they are in a dangerous area. 4. Be competent in
recognizing fall hazards. 5. Warn
employee/contractor/contractors when they appear to be unaware
of a fall hazard Or are acting in an unsafe manner. 6. Be on the
same walking/working surface as the monitored
Employee/contractor and within visual sighting distance of the
monitored Employee/contractor. 7. be close enough to communicate
orally with the employee/contractor/contractors. 8. Not allow
other responsibilities to encumber monitoring. If the Safety
monitor becomes too encumbered with other responsibilities, The
monitor shall (1) IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY OWNER & AND STAY WITH MAIN
RESPONSIBILITIES UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE FROM OWNER ONLY. INCASE
Owners Require his services in a different area (2) work must
seize until Safety monitoring functions have been turned over
the To another designated, competent person. The safety
monitoring system Shall not be used when the wind is strong
enough to cause loads With large surface areas to swing out of
Radius, or result in loss of control of the load, or when
weather Conditions cause the walking-working surfaces to become
icy or Slippery.
Control Zone
System Protective warning barrier system
A controlled
access zone means an area designated and clearly marked, in
which leading edge work may take place without the use of
guardrail, safety net or personal fall arrest systems to protect
the employee/contractor/contractors in the area. Control zone
systems shall comply with the following provisions:
1. When used
to control access to areas where leading edge and Other
operations are taking place the controlled access zone shall be
Defined by a control line or by any other means that restricts
Access. When control lines are used, they shall be erected not
less than 6 Feet nor more than 60 feet or half the length of the
Member being erected, whichever is less, from the leading edge.
2. The control line shall extend along the entire length of the
Unprotected or leading edge and shall be approximately parallel
to The unprotected or leading edge. 3. The control line shall be
connected on each side to a guardrail System or wall. 4. Control
lines shall consist of ropes, wires, tapes, or Equivalent
materials and supporting stanchions as follows: 5. Each line
shall be flagged or otherwise clearly marked at not More than
6-foot intervals with high-visibility material. 6. Each line
shall be rigged and supported in such a way that it’s Lowest
point (including sag) is not less than 39 inches from The
walking/working surface and its highest point is not more than
45 Inches from the walking/working surface. 7. Each line shall
have a minimum breaking strength of 200 pounds
All workers
are required to follow all OSHA guidelines, pertaining to each
individual task being performed, it will be duty of the
designated safety supervisor, to coordinate each task and make
sure that all guidelines are being followed per OSHA Guidelines.
Accident
Investigations
All accidents
that result in injury to workers, regardless of their nature,
shall be investigated and reported. It is an integral part of
any safety program that documentation takes place as soon as
possible so that the cause and means of prevention can be
identified to prevent a reoccurrence.
In the event
that an employee/contractor falls or there is some other
related, serious incident occurring, this plan shall be reviewed
to determine if additional practices, procedures, or training
need to be implemented to prevent similar types of falls or
incidents from occurring.
Changes to
Plan
Any changes to
the plan will be approved by designated safety personal and
owners. This plan shall be reviewed by a qualified person as the
job progresses to determine if additional practices, procedures
or training needs to be implemented by the competent person to
improve the overall success of our safety procedures. Workers
shall be notified and trained, if necessary, in the new
procedures. A copy of this plan and all approved changes shall
be maintained at the jobsite.
